Jim has had a varied career that started in 1960 with service in the Royal Australian Navy. He trained as an engineer and manager in the United Kingdom and Australia. He left the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander and joined the private sector in 1982. After two years with Thorn EMI Electronics, at the Defence Research Centre Salisbury and Honeywell's, Marine Systems Division in the U.S.A., he took up a position with the South Australian Department of Marine and Harbours as Director, Commercial before transferring to the Department of State Development and Technology as the Director, Major Projects. He went on to become the Deputy Director of the Department. He led the South Australian bid to establish a submarine construction facility for the Collins Class submarines at Port Adelaide and was involved in all major economic development issues in South Australia between 1983 and 1987. In 1987 he left the government and joined a small team involved in acquisitions, mergers and takeovers, mainly in defence and oil industry related companies. In 1989 he joined Baulderstone Hornibrook as the Managing Director of their subsidiary engineering company, Hornibrook NGI Pty Ltd and Director Development for Baulderstones' offshore business. In 1994 he founded Fibretech Developments Ltd, a research and development company, involved in converting crop wastes (such as sugar cane bagasse) to stockfeed. Fibretech's products are sold in the domestic and international markets. He has held company directorships or advisory roles with a number of companies and organizations, including the Australian Design Council (South Australia), South Australian Tourism Board and the South Australian Institute of Technology Centenary Commission. James became Chief Executive Officer and shareholder of IBL in 2002 and continued his advisory roles as a member of the South Australian Government's Defence Industry Advisory Board and as advisor to Leighton Holding's defence acquisition team in 2004.
